From Disaster to Glory — FIFA World Cup 2026 Day 4 Gave Us Three Stories Nobody Saw Coming

If you thought the first three days of FIFA World Cup 2026 knockouts were dramatic, Day 4 just changed the entire conversation. England almost crashed out against a team making their first ever World Cup knockout appearance. Belgium were 2-0 down with five minutes left and somehow won. The USA had a man sent off and still kept a clean sheet. Three matches. Three near-disasters. Three teams that found a way through anyway.

This is the FIFA 2026 knockout stage at its absolute finest — and it's only getting better.

England 2-1 DR Congo: Kane Stepped Up When Nobody Else Could

Kane Stepped

Nobody saw this coming. DR Congo, playing their first ever World Cup knockout match, went ahead inside seven minutes. Brian Cipenga met a flicked pass at the far post and fired low past Jordan Pickford. England fans went silent. The whole stadium couldn't believe it.

What followed was nearly 70 minutes of England looking completely stuck. Lionel Mpasi in the DR Congo goal was outstanding — saving brilliantly from two Jude Bellingham headers and blocking Kane right on the stroke of halftime. At one point, Marcus Rashford had a shot cleared off the line by his own teammate Aaron Wan-Bissaka. The pressure kept building and nothing was going in.

Then Declan Rice stepped up. He drove forward, laid it wide, and a cross from substitute Anthony Gordon found Kane at the back post. One touch. 2-1. The 75th minute. England level and the relief was enormous.

But the captain wasn't done. With four minutes left, three defenders closed Kane down on the edge of the box — and none of them could stop him from curling an unstoppable shot into the top corner. England through. Kane said after the match it was one of his favourite ever England games. Given what they went through to win it, it is easy to understand why.

Belgium 3-2 Senegal: 2-0 Down With 5 Minutes Left BUT Belgium Still Won

2-0 Down With 5 Minutes Left BUT Belgium Still Won

This match needs to be talked about for years. Senegal were 2-0 up with just five minutes of normal time left. Habib Diarra had scored in the 25th minute and Ismaila Sarr thumped a stunning volley into the top corner in the 51st. Belgium looked done. Finished. Booking their flights home.

Then substitute Romelu Lukaku pulled one back in the 86th minute with a sweeping near-post finish. One minute later, Youri Tielemans got on the end of a Leandro Trossard cross and headed it into an empty net after the Senegal goalkeeper misjudged it completely. 2-2. In the 89th minute. The whole Senegal side couldn't process what had just happened.

Extra time went by with nothing until the 125th minute — the very last moments of the entire extra time period — when Tielemans went down in the box under a challenge from Lamine Camara. VAR reviewed it. Penalty given. Tielemans stepped up and tucked it into the top corner.

That goal at 124 minutes and 44 seconds is now officially the latest winning goal ever scored in World Cup history. Belgium had done the impossible. The greatest comeback of the whole FIFA World Cup 2026 tournament so far.

USA 2-0 Bosnia & Herzegovina: They Lost Their Best Player to a Red Card and Still Cruised Through

USA 2-0 Bosnia & Herzegovina: They Lost Their Best Player to a Red Card and Still Cruised Through

The USA were the better side from the start but it took until the 45th minute for the breakthrough. Folarin Balogun received the ball at the top of the box, took one touch to control it and nutmegged the goalkeeper with his left foot. His third goal of the tournament and a deserved halftime lead.

Then came the drama. In the 64th minute, a VAR review gave Balogun a red card for stepping on an opponent's ankle. USA down to 10 men with the result still wide open. Bosnia came forward looking for the equaliser but the American defence held firm — not one clear chance conceded.

And with 10 men, they still scored again. Malik Tillman stepped up for a free kick from the edge of the box in the 82nd minute, curled it beautifully over the wall, and watched it hit the goalkeeper's hand and fall into the net. USA through 2-0 — their first World Cup knockout win since 2002 — and the home crowd absolutely loved every second of it.
