FIFA World Cup 2026 Day 9: Screaming at the Screen, VAR Drama & Absolute Chaos — What a Night

Day 9 of the FIFA World Cup 2026 was one of those nights where you just had to be watching live. Four matches. Four completely different stories. First-minute stunners, VAR heartbreak, a Brazil finally looking like Brazil, and a Turkey exit nobody saw coming quite this fast.

If you missed any of it — this is your full recap. And if you're serious about following the rest of this tournament, stick around because we've also got something exciting from Winbox to share.

USA 2–0 Australia: No Pulisic? No Problem. The Yanks Just Made History

No Pulisic? No problem.

The co-hosts walked into Seattle's Lumen Field without Christian Pulisic — out with a calf injury — and still produced a performance that had the whole crowd on their feet from start to finish.

It only took 11 minutes. Folarin Balogun drove hard down the left, cut the ball back into the box, and Australian defender Cameron Burgess had no choice but to turn it into his own net. Seattle went wild.

Then came the best moment of the match. In the 43rd minute, Sergiño Dest's deflected shot hung in the air, and 21-year-old Alex Freeman — a name you'll want to remember — timed his run perfectly and headed it home. The linesman's flag went up. The crowd held its breath. VAR reviewed it. And then — goal confirmed. The noise was deafening.

Australia pushed in the second half, brought on fresh legs at half-time, but Matt Freese in goal barely had a serious save to make.

USA are through to the Round of 32. First time they've won their opening two World Cup games since 1930. History made at home.

Morocco 1–0 Scotland: A Goal Scored in 70 Seconds Flat

Scotland came buzzing. Their opening win was their first World Cup victory since 1982, and the belief was real. Morocco, though, had a point to prove after their 1-1 draw with Brazil.

What happened next? Ismael Saibari made sure nobody forgot his name.

Sixty-nine seconds into the game, Brahim Diaz played a perfectly timed through ball and Saibari hammered it into the roof of the net without breaking stride. Scotland hadn't even settled yet. It was already 1-0.

Credit to the Scots — they didn't collapse. They fought back, had half-chances, and kept Morocco honest. But the Atlas Lions were solid, organised, and professional. The 1-0 stood.

Morocco moved to four points. Scotland's knockout hopes are now hanging by a thread.

Brazil 3–0 Haiti: Cunha Took Over, Vinicius Finished It — Brazil Are Back

After drawing with Morocco in their opener, there was pressure on Brazil to show up in Philadelphia. And show up they did — in style, and mostly before half-time.

Matheus Cunha, who came in to start for Igor Thiago, opened the scoring in the 23rd minute with a composed finish. Thirteen minutes later, he was at it again with something genuinely special — a goal of real quality that had every Brazilian fan off their seat.

Then Vinicius Junior put the cherry on top deep into first-half stoppage time. One-on-one with the keeper, cool as you like — 3-0. Done and dusted before the second half even started.

Haiti held firm in the second half and Brazil eased off, but the result was never in doubt. Brazil sit top of Group C with four points and are looking very much like title contenders again.

Paraguay 1–0 Türkiye: One Minute, One Goal, One Nation Sent Home

The tension in Levi's Stadium was real. Paraguay needed a win to stay alive. Turkey needed at least a draw or they were out.

Paraguay scored inside the first minute — just like Morocco had done hours earlier — and then spent the next 89 minutes defending their lives.

Turkey poured everything forward. Baris Yilmaz created danger, Can Uzun forced a sharp save from goalkeeper Orlando Gill when it really mattered. Eleven corners. Waves of pressure. But nothing went in.

Final whistle. Turkey was eliminated. Paraguay survived in the most gutsy way possible. And the USA, after Paraguay's result, officially clinched the top spot in Group D.
