FIFA World Cup 2026 Day 5: Four Matches, Four Draws, Zero Certainty

Four matches. Four draws. Zero dominant winners. Day 5 of FIFA World Cup 2026 was pure madness — and if you missed even one minute, here's everything that went down.

Spain vs Cape Verde (0–0): A 40-Year-Old Second Division Goalkeeper Just Embarrassed the European Champions

Nobody expected this. Not even close.

Spain — the reigning European Champions and one of the biggest favourites at FIFA World Cup 2026 — walked into Atlanta expecting an easy win over Cape Verde, a tiny island nation making their very first World Cup appearance ever.

What happened instead? A goalkeeper named Vozinha said no. Seven times.

Seven shots on target. Seven saves. At 40 years old, playing club football in Portugal's second division, Vozinha single-handedly shut out one of the most talented squads in world football.

Spain had 27 shots total, 74% possession, and 11 corners — and still couldn't score.

The craziest moment came in the 39th minute. Ferran Torres hit the crossbar, the ball bounced loose, Oyarzabal tried heading in the rebound — and Vozinha was somehow back on his feet to push it out. The crowd couldn't believe it. Even when Spain brought on Lamine Yamal in the 74th minute to rescue the game, it wasn't enough. Vozinha made two more crucial stops in the 84th and 90th minute.

Final score: 0–0. Spain are at the bottom of Group H. Cape Verde have a point. And Vozinha went from 48,000 Instagram followers to 1.5 million in under 30 minutes after the final whistle.

Egypt vs Belgium (1–1): 22 Seconds on the Pitch. One Goal. That's the Lukaku Effect

Over in Seattle, Egypt — a team that had never won a single World Cup match in their history — came this close to writing history.

Emam Ashour put Egypt ahead in the 19th minute with his first ever international goal, set up by Mohamed Salah who was pulling strings all over the pitch in a number 10 role. The Pharaohs held that lead for nearly 47 minutes, defending brilliantly and looking every bit like a team ready to make history.

Then Romelu Lukaku came on as a substitute. Twenty-two seconds later, his mere presence near the box caused Hany to put the ball into his own net. Twenty-two seconds. Lukaku hadn't even broken a sweat.

Belgium pushed for a winner but Egypt's goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir was rock solid. The game ended 1–1. Egypt walk away with their heads high. Group G is completely up for grabs.

Saudi Arabia vs Uruguay (1–1): Saudi Arabia Nearly Did It Again — Uruguay Left Sweating in Miami

The shocks kept rolling in Miami.

Abdulelah Al Amri gave Saudi Arabia a first-half lead with a perfectly timed finish, and for 75 minutes it looked like yet another giant killing was on the cards. Uruguay — two-time World Cup winners — could not find a way through Saudi Arabia's compact, organised defence.

It took until the 80th minute for Maxi Araújo, who had barely been on the pitch, to bury a rebound with his left foot and rescue a 1–1 draw for Uruguay.

The result leaves Group H in total chaos. Spain are bottom on one point. Cape Verde and Saudi Arabia both have one point. Uruguay have one point. Every single game left in this group is now a must-win. Nobody saw this coming.

Iran vs New Zealand (2–2): Both Teams Scored Twice. Neither Team Gave Up

Save the best for last. The final game of Day 5 at the sold-out SoFi Stadium in LA was an absolute thrill ride from the first whistle to the last.

Elijah Just opened the scoring in the 7th minute with a sharp finish after a brilliant one-two with Chris Wood. Iran equalised through Ramin Rezaeian, who reacted first to a loose ball and finished from close range. Then Just scored again in the 54th minute — his second of the match — and the 88,000-strong crowd was going mental.

But Iran hit back again. Rezaeian played a beautiful cross from the right that found Mohammad Mohebbi completely alone in the box, and his glancing header to the far post made it 2–2.

Full-time: Iran 2–2 New Zealand. Four brilliant goals, non-stop action, and Group G now perfectly deadlocked — Belgium, Egypt, Iran, and New Zealand all on one point each. Every remaining game is a final. We love to see it.
